What Is IPL Therapy?

IPL stands for intense pulsed light, a non-invasive treatment that uses broad-spectrum light energy to improve the skin’s overall quality and appearance. At our medical spa in Charleston, we use Lumecca by InMode® to deliver this treatment. Lumecca applies powerful, concentrated bursts of light energy into the skin, targeting pigmented and vascular irregularities without harming the surrounding tissue. The light is absorbed by melanin and hemoglobin, breaking down unwanted pigmentation while stimulating the skin’s natural collagen production. The outcome is a clearer, more youthful complexion with minimal disruption to your daily routine.

What Are the Benefits of IPL Therapy?

Lumecca IPL is designed to address a wide range of visible skin concerns, often with impressive results after just one to three sessions. Patients commonly seek treatment for:

  • Sun damage, age spots, and freckles that have accumulated over the years
  • Hyperpigmentation and uneven skin tone
  • Redness, rosacea, broken capillaries, and certain vascular lesions
  • Improved skin texture through stimulated collagen production, which can also be enhanced with complementary treatments like Morpheus8

Am I a Candidate for IPL Therapy?

IPL therapy is a good fit for men and women who are bothered by visible sun damage, uneven pigmentation, or vascular irregularities such as redness or broken veins. Ideal candidates are in good general health, have realistic expectations, and tend to fall within lighter to medium skin tones.

IPL may not be appropriate for those with very dark skin tones, an active tan, certain skin conditions, or those who are pregnant. The best way to determine whether Lumecca is right for you is through a one-on-one consultation at Shine Medical Spa, where we can review your skin type, concerns, and medical history together.

What Does the IPL Treatment Involve?

Your Lumecca session at Shine Medical Spa is straightforward and typically completed within 30 to 45 minutes. To start, your provider will cleanse the treatment area and apply a cooling gel to enhance comfort and improve light delivery. You’ll be given protective eyewear before the session begins. The Lumecca handpiece is then gently guided over the skin, delivering precise pulses of light; most patients describe the sensation as a brief snap or warm flash.

Once the treatment is complete, the gel is removed, and a soothing moisturizer with SPF is applied. You’re free to return to your normal activities right away. For best results, we typically recommend a series of one to three sessions spaced three to four weeks apart.

What Can I Expect After My IPL Treatment?

Recovery after Lumecca IPL is minimal for most patients. You may notice some mild redness or warmth immediately following your session, which typically fades within a few hours. In the days that follow, darkened spots or pigmentation may rise to the surface; this is a normal and expected part of the process. Those fragments should gradually flake away over one to two weeks, revealing clearer skin beneath.

To support your results, we recommend avoiding direct sun exposure, applying a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher daily, and avoiding harsh exfoliants for at least one week after treatment. Your provider will give you a personalized aftercare plan at your appointment.

Are There Side Effects to IPL Therapy?

Lumecca IPL is considered a safe, well-established treatment when performed by a trained provider. Side effects are generally mild and temporary, and may include redness or warmth at the treatment site, minor swelling, darkening of pigmented spots before they shed, and temporary sun sensitivity. Serious complications are rare. Our team will walk you through all pre- and post-treatment guidelines to keep you comfortable and help you get the most out of your results.
